Content Description

The bulk of this collection relates to two writing projects completed by William Cibes Jr., professor of government, during the early 1970s: 1) a 1973 report, New London, Connecticut, Twenty Years after Brown v. Board of Education, written for the United States Commission on Civil Rights, and 2) Extra-Judicial Activities of Justices of the United States Supreme Court, 1790-1960, his 1975 docotral dissertation. It contains research materials, interview notes, drafts, and final copies. In addition, the collection includes written work by Connecticut College students, also from the 1970s, exploring various aspects of New London politics.

About William Cibes

William J. Cibes Jr. was a faculty member in the Department of Government at Connectict College from 1969-1994 and director of the Urban Affairs program from 1971-1976. In 1975, he received his Ph.D. in politics from Princeton University. At the College, he taught courses focused on American politics including American political thought, urban politics, constitutional law, and political decision-making.

Cibes was active in city politics since his arrival in New London, eventually being elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1978, where he served for 12 years. He took a leave of absence from the College from 1991-1994 to serve as secretary of the state Office of Policy and Management, before leaving entirely to become chancellor of the Connecticut State University system.

Acquisition

Materials in Series I. U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and Series III. Student Work were given to Connecticut College by William Cibes Jr. in 2020. Following Cibes' death in 2024, his estate donated a copy of his doctoral dissertation and related research notes and drafts, which form Series II.

Processing Information

Initially processed in December 2022 by Jenifer Ishee, Linda Lear Special Collections Librarian, as MS-075 William Cibes Jr. New London Civil Rights collection. Dissertation materials added and collection reprocessed by Deborah Kloiber, College Archivist, in April 2024.
