Scope and Contents

The collection consists of photographic materials from The Day newspaper archive documenting New London County and southeastern Connecticut from 1946-2002. Materials include 35mm film strips, negative film, both color and black and white photographic prints, and ephemeral materials. Originally known as The New London Day, the newspaper was founded in 1881 and remains one of the United States' independently owned newspapers. The collection provides a visual history of a New England community experiencing significant social, economic, and political changes during the mid-to-late 20th century.

Conditions Governing Access

During the rehousing and processing phase, access to the New London Day Photo Collection is by appointment only and reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Currently, it is restricted to researchers, scholars, educators, and other qualified individuals who demonstrate a legitmate research need and specific purpose for consulting the materials. To make an appointment, email learcenter@conncoll.edu. In your email, please include a detailed description of the purpose of your request, specific subject matters and dates sought, intended use of photographs, and institutional affiliation (if applicable). Once the collection is processed and fully described, the collection will be open for browsing.

Conditions Governing Use
