Scope and Contents
Content Warning: Racist Description of Middle Eastern People; Derogatory Description of German People and Dutch People; Possible Stereotype of Travelling Caravan; Pro-Colonialism.
Jack describes travelling through the Red Sea, the Gulf of Suez, the Suez Canal, and Cairo. He also chronicles passing the Tropic of Cancer, Mount Sinai, Port Tewfise (likely Port Tawfiq, Egypt), the Bitter Lakes (along Suez Canal), Ismailiya (Ismailia, Egypt), a caravan (which he states is going to Mecca), the Princess Juliana (he ship he had travelled on), Kantara (possibly El Qantara, Egypt), the weather; and Port Said (Egypt). Jack comments the Suez Canal in depth and compares the Suez Canal to the Panama Canal. Kantara is detailed along with its history, the landscape with its signs of earlier warfare, the current presence of armed troops, and how it fit into the history of British warfare. Jack ends with his present and future travel plans. The racist description of the Egyptian people is in relation to interacting with them, colonization of Egypt and Palestine, and the warfare led by General Edmund Allenby. The derogatory description of Germans and Dutch relate to the passengers on the Princess Juliana.
