Scope and Contents
Content Warning: Racist Stereotypes of Egyptians and Muslims; Racist Terminology for Black People; Pro-Colonialism,
Jack writes about landing at Port Said, English colonialism in Egypt, interactions with customs, the people in Egypt, his stay in Port Said, and his owning a Java Kriss (type of Javanese dagger). He describes his train trip to Cairo and Ismailiya, including the landscape (including villages and cities), caravans, farming practices, and the settlements of Zagazig and Benha. The importance of the Nile River is included as well. He continues relating what Cairo is like, the different people who live there, the different people he spends time with, his hotel, the American military presence, foreign involvement with Egyptian railroads, railroads in Palestine and across the Middle East, trips to see famous sites (e.g., Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx), riding a camel, the Cairo Bazar, and purchasing tickets to Paris from Cooks & Son. He notes he took photographs. Jack ends with his train to Alexandria (which stops at Banha, Tautah, Kafer Zayat [possibly Kafr Az-Zayyat], and Damanhur [Damanhour]), facts about Egypt, and arriving in Alexandria. The racist stereotype of Egyptians and Muslims is used in relation to English colonialism, the need to protect Christians, who are the real Egyptians, and appearance. The racist terminology for Black people is used in relation to the actions and socio-economic standing of Egyptians. The main letter is unfinished, but a smaller letter is attached that the letter was divided into two envelopes and mailed at Naples.
