These materials build an understanding of the state of Connecticut in the United States during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. There are notebooks and ledgers from times of war and this timeframe covers numerous wars. Upon initial review, the wars named were the War of 1812 and the Revolutionary War. Other wars may be mentioned upon further study. The personal life of people within this timeframe is seen through this collection. The educational information shared, the information shared between friends and family members, and the notebooks and ledgers of important information build a well-rounded overview of important aspects of every-day life.

There are gaps within this collection of information about racial and female experiences within these time periods. There are a few letters and personal correspondences from/to women, but a majority of the information gathered is from/to men. There is no race attached to the names included, therefore, additional research on the genealogy of the men named must be done to determine racial identity.

Biographical / Historical

The New London Local History collection was originally curated and collected by Hazel Johnson. Hazel was a Librarian for Connecticut College for 25 years, from 1943-1968. In the 1940s, Hazel undertook the project with Professor of History, Chester Destler, to build the manuscript collection. While not much is known about the materials, this collection relates to local Connecticut history, focusing on the New London County area. The items in this collection date from 1709 to 1951, with the original owners either sending or receiving them from locations within New London County, CT. Items included, but are not limited to, notebooks, journals, diaries, personal correspondences, professional correspondences, legal documents, payment receipts, shipping manifests, poetry, booklets, a possible deed, a possible letter of indenture, possibly accounting ledgers, a possible land sale, a receipt of provisions provided to an army for the summer of 1783, and some genealogical history. The items within this collection were purchased using the Palmer Fund Grant, gifted by Marcella Putnam, and a variety of other gifts.
