Biographical / Historical
This collections contains manuscript items of the Reed Family Association of Taunton, Massachusetts. This association is one of the oldest in America and was founded in 1847. The family descends from William ReedReade (1605-) who immigrated to America in 1635 and settled at Weymouth, Massachusetts. William married Avis Deacon and had several children, and two, James and John, relocated to Taunton, Massachusetts in approximately 1680. An early family estate at Taunton became the meeting place of the family association. Henry Gooding Reed (1810-1901), the seventh in lineal descent from William Read of Weymouth, was a long-term president of the association.
