Historical Context
"Pitchfork Ben" Tillman was a notable White Supremacist politician and strong advocate of Lynch Law. During his heyday, from his participation in the 1876 Hamburgh Riots to his death in 1918, he was South Carolina's governor, U.S. Senator, and architect of Carolina's 1895 constitution which disenfrachised most of the State's black population.
