"The Negro Problem and Immigration" Address by Benjamin Tillman, January 24, 1908
Historical Context
"Pitchfork Ben" Tillman was a notable White Supremacist politician and strong advocate of Lynch Law. During his heyday, from his participation in the 1876 Hamburgh Riots to his death in 1918, he was South Carolina's governor, U.S. Senator, and architect of Carolina's 1895 constitution which disenfrachised most of the State's black population. In this particular address, Tillman warns of complacency and warns that with the help of "negro-loving white men" threaten to "sink the noble White Race" in the Southern United States.
