"Yesterday we reached Hawaii from..." (March 5, 1921), 1921
Scope and Contents
Content Warning: Racist Stereotype of Hawaiiian people; Stereotype of Hawaii; Pro-Colonialism; Reference to Plantations.
Jack describes being on the ship, docking at Honolulu, and travelling around Oahu, Hawaii (especially the landscape). He also notes the stationed military, plantations (e.g., sugar), trains on the island, and Duke Kahamamoku, competitive swimmer and father of modern surfing (to whom the stereotype is used). Stereotype of Hawaii is in relation to its beaches, but the stereotype of Hawaiian people and pro-colonialist beliefs occur throughout the letter.
