Jack describes the passengers aboard the ship. This includes "a little black girl" being bought by a Dutch man in Manila. He uses a derogatory adjective to describe a Hindu Man. A single woman and a single man are gossiped as engaging in consenual sex, and a woman from New England is described negatively. Jack describes W. Somerset Maugham, an English author who had recently published The Moon and Six Pence, and Frederick G. Haxton, his secretary.
