Jack writes about travelling on the Emmon River from the China Sea to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam). the landscape, rice farming, people on the riverbanks, and the local French government's interactions with the boat. In Saigon, he writes about the people, the landscape, the weather, and what he does. He states that he went separate ways from Maugham, Haxton, and 2 other individuals after dinner because he did not have interest in "what men of their type would be up to in a town like that." He also notes the presence of Standard Oil Co. of New York in Vietnam and Cambodia being colonized by France.
