Scope and Contents

First Letter - Content Warning: Racist Descriptions of the Singaporean People; Pro-Colonialist.

Jack describes Singapore - the landscape, the people (including multiple ethnicities), the Raffles Hotel (downstairs and their rooms), the economy, automobiles, and sanitation. He compares Singapore and Saigon. He also notes the Botanical Gardens and a rubber plantation. Jack then describes a trip to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), the city (landscape), the presence of trains, and what he did there.

Second Letter - Content Warning: Racist Description of Turkish, Chinese, and Native Peoples; Racist Terminology for Chinese People; Derogatory Description of American People; Elitist; Racist Term for Japanese People; Sexist; Pro-Colonialist.

Jack describes how Singapore is a "melting pot", even more so than New York, with people being equals except for white people. He describes different jobs associated with different groups. Jack continues writing about another boat and the people on his ship (e.g., multiple ethnicities and equality among all but separates lower classes and servants/native peoples). He tells his sister it is "no part of the world for decent American women".
